hunting reduced the population even further and as a result these genetics are not available on small private reserves.

To create our current herd we searched large conservation areas with well-established buffalo populations. We found some exceptional animals from, in and around the Kruger National Park and brought them to the Brandberg reserve.

Using diverse Kruger genetics we have managed to breed some of the largest bodied, deep curled and most impressively horned buffalo in Southern Africa.

It is usually mature bulls with a thick heavy boss and horn tip set below the boss that becomes the breeding bull. A large boss is important during territorial clashes and it is mature large bodied bulls that tend to dominate.
A buffalo bull with these characteristics and a high SCI score would generally result in an exceptional breeding bull.

Brandberg bulls are exposed to a natural hierarchy and our bulls grow socially adapted and virile. The dominant breeding bulls suppress the younger males until they are ready to breed, and then only exceptional young breeding bulls are selected once they have reached maturity.
These genetically superior males are allowed to roam in large open areas with specially selected females. With no male competition we can ensure the best genetic matches and the quality of our Buffalo is exceptional.

The Brandberg herd with its diverse genetics offers an ideal opportunity for breeders to enhance their buffalo populations.
